Kwara Police Dismiss Viral Boko Haram Arrest Claims in Ilorin, Warn Against Misinformation
The Kwara State Police Command has dismissed widespread social media reports alleging that suspected Boko Haram members were arrested in Ilorin, the state capital, describing the claims as false and misleading.
In an official response issued by the command, police authorities clarified that no such arrests had taken place within the state and urged residents to avoid spreading unverified information capable of creating unnecessary fear and tension among the public.
According to the police, security agencies in Kwara State continue to monitor the security situation across the region while maintaining routine intelligence and surveillance operations aimed at safeguarding lives and property. The command emphasized that the circulation of false security alerts on social media could undermine public confidence and disrupt peace within communities.
The clarification follows growing online speculation and viral messages alleging that Boko Haram suspects had been apprehended in parts of Ilorin. The police warned citizens against relying on unconfirmed online sources, encouraging members of the public to obtain security-related information only through official communication channels and credible news platforms.
Security analysts have repeatedly warned about the dangers of misinformation, especially in matters relating to terrorism and national security. False reports, experts say, can fuel panic, heighten public anxiety, and distract law enforcement agencies from genuine security concerns.
Kwara State, located in Nigeria’s North-Central region, has largely remained outside the core areas affected by Boko Haram insurgency, which has predominantly impacted parts of the North East for over a decade. However, authorities continue to stress the importance of vigilance and responsible information sharing amid evolving security challenges across the country.
The police command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order and called on residents to remain calm, security conscious, and cooperative with law enforcement agencies.
