Lagos Consumer Agency Recovers ₦26.2m for Ikeja Electric Customers, Resolves 528 Complaints.
The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has facilitated refunds and electricity bill credit adjustments totalling ₦26.24 million for consumers following complaints against Ikeja Electric Distribution Company (IKEDC) between January and September 2026.
The intervention resulted in the resolution of 528 out of 556 complaints received against the electricity distribution company during the nine-month period, representing an approximately 95 per cent resolution rate. However, 28 complaints remain unresolved and are still undergoing attention.
According to the agency, the financial recovery comprises refunds and credit adjustments secured for affected customers through its consumer protection and mediation interventions.
LASCOPA’s General Manager and Chief Executive Officer, Afolabi Solebo, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to promoting fairness, transparency, accountability and improved service delivery within Lagos State’s electricity distribution sector.
Speaking on the development, the Head of LASCOPA’s Complaints and Mediation Department, Yusuf Musiliu, explained that the agency receives and examines consumer complaints through both online and offline channels.
He noted that regular stakeholder engagement sessions between the agency, Ikeja Electric officials and affected consumers provide opportunities to address grievances, negotiate solutions and reach mutually acceptable agreements.
Musiliu disclosed that the stakeholder meetings are held on the last Thursday of every month, providing consumers with a structured platform to escalate unresolved disputes and seek appropriate redress.
The agency also encouraged electricity consumers experiencing excessive billing, estimated billing disputes, over billing, inadequate electricity supply and other alleged unfair practices to report their concerns through the appropriate channels.
It advised affected customers to provide supporting documents, including electricity bills, payment receipts and other relevant evidence, to facilitate investigations and ensure faster resolution of complaints.
LASCOPA further urged consumers to pursue established complaint resolution procedures rather than resorting to self help.
The agency said its interventions are consistent with its consumer protection mandate under the Lagos State Consumer Protection Law 2025, as amended.
Residents seeking assistance can contact LASCOPA through its toll free helpline, 080 0005 2726, available on weekdays, or submit complaints through its official email channel.
Broader Implications for Electricity Consumers
The development highlights the importance of consumer protection institutions in addressing disputes between electricity distribution companies and their customers.
With complaints about electricity billing, metering and service delivery remaining significant concerns for many Nigerian households and businesses, accessible complaint-resolution mechanisms are essential to strengthening public confidence in the power sector.
Although the resolution of 528 complaints represents substantial progress, the 28 outstanding cases also underline the need for continued regulatory oversight and timely responses to consumer grievances.
For electricity consumers, the intervention reinforces the importance of retaining payment receipts, electricity bills and other transaction records when challenging disputed charges.
Ultimately, sustained accountability, transparent billing practices and effective consumer protection will remain critical to improving electricity service delivery and protecting the interests of Nigerians.
