A tragic incident occurred on Sunday at the Mosalasi Roundabout, along the Ipaja axis of Lagos, where a female pedestrian was fatally struck by a black Toyota Tundra with registration number FST 222 HV. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the arrest of the driver, who was allegedly speeding at the time of the incident.
According to LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq, the vehicle veered off the carriageway and mounted the pedestrian walkway, hitting the woman who died instantly from the impact. The vehicle then crashed into a nearby livestock compound, damaging its perimeter fence and a nearby billboard.
The driver attempted to flee the scene but was quickly apprehended by LASTMA officers and handed over to police operatives. The remains of the deceased were handed over to the police for proper procedures, and the driver is now in police custody, undergoing intense interrogation as part of an ongoing investigation.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sorrow over the loss and extended condolences to the victim’s family. He emphasized the grave consequences of reckless driving and prayed for the family’s strength and fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
The incident is currently under investigation, and the police will work to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash. The case highlights the importance of road safety and the need for drivers to exercise caution and follow traffic rules to prevent such incidents.
