On November 19, 2024, the Lagos State Government announced its intention to conduct an investigation into a disturbing incident involving a 10-year-old boy and a 22-year-old teacher, Louis Prosper, at Blessed Peace School located in the Abule Odu area of Egbeda, within the Alimosho Local Government Area. The allegations suggest that the teacher engaged in inappropriate conduct with the minor, leading to his arrest by local police.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Ministry of Education, Mr. Kayode Sutton, expressed concerns about the failure to address such incidents promptly. He indicated that had the ministry been informed earlier about the teacher’s alleged misconduct, appropriate measures could have been taken to prevent the situation from escalating.
According to reports from Prosper was apprehended after it was revealed that he had allegedly lured the young boy into a secluded area of the school under false pretenses. Claiming that he would take the child to a spelling bee and art competition with the promise of earning money and opportunities for travel, Prosper manipulated the boy’s trust. Once in a classroom, he instructed the boy to behave like a girl and to remove his trousers, leading to the reported assault. During the incident, he allegedly threatened the child, insisting he should remain silent about what had transpired, while falsely assuring him of a bright future in the competition.
In light of these allegations, Sutton reiterated the commitment of the Lagos State Government to ensure the safety of students in both public and private educational institutions. He acknowledged the challenges of monitoring private schools, particularly when incidents are not reported to the authorities. “We are not unmindful that things like these happen in private and public schools, which of course we have to a large extent nipped in the bud,” he stated.
Sutton emphasized the importance of communication from school management to the government. He pointed out that had the school escalated the issue, the government would have taken immediate action. Moving forward, the appropriate department has been alerted and will initiate a thorough investigation into the matter. This will include a visit to the school to assess the situation and determine the necessary steps for ensuring the safety and well-being of students.
A representative from the school, who identified herself as the proprietress but chose to remain anonymous, confirmed that the teacher had been arrested and subsequently dismissed from his position once the school became aware of the allegations. “The teacher has already been detained and is no longer at the school. That’s all we know about the matter for now; he is no longer employed with us,” she stated before concluding the conversation.
This incident follows a troubling trend of similar cases in the region. Just months prior, in July 2024, another teacher, Bright Emelogu, was sentenced to life imprisonment for the sexual assault of a pupil, highlighting a pressing need for vigilance and accountability within educational settings.
