The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has recently arrested a woman named Janty Emmanuel for allegedly abusing the Nigerian currency.
The arrest was made following intelligence that revealed she was spraying Naira notes at a social event in Gombe State. The commission’s Head of Media & Publicity, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the arrest and stated that the suspect admitted to committing the crime. Once the investigations are concluded, she will be charged to court.
The EFCC has been cracking down on individuals who abuse the Naira in recent months. In may, controversial crossdresser Bobrisky was sentenced to six months imprisonment without the option of a fine for abusing the Naira. The Federal High Court in Lagos State handed down the judgment as a deterrent to others who engage in similar acts of mutilating and abusing the currency. Bobrisky had pleaded ignorance of the law but was informed by the judge that ignorance was not an excuse.
In a separate case, popular celebrity barman Cubana Chief Priest reached an agreement with the EFCC to resolve a naira abuse charge outside of court. He appeared before Justice Kehinde Ogundare and faced three counts related to abusing the national currency at a social gathering. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N10 million.
These cases highlight the efforts of the EFCC to enforce the laws against currency abuse in Nigeria. The commission aims to deter individuals from engaging in such acts and to educate the public about the importance of respecting the country’s currency. The outcome of these cases will serve as a precedent and reminder for others who may consider similar actions.
As the investigations continue and the legal proceedings unfold, it remains to be seen how these cases will be resolved. The public will be watching closely for updates on the outcomes and the impact they may have on future incidents of currency abuse.
