“NDLEA Intercepts South African Woman with 5.75kg Heroin at Abuja Airport, Intensifies Crackdown on Drug Trafficking”
Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a South African woman at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja after she was allegedly found in possession of 5.75 kilograms of heroin, marking another major breakthrough in the country’s ongoing fight against transnational drug trafficking.
According to the NDLEA, the suspect was apprehended during routine passenger screening at the Abuja international airport. Preliminary investigations indicate that the illicit drug consignment was concealed for international trafficking, with anti narcotics officers successfully detecting and seizing the narcotics before they could be moved through Nigeria’s aviation network.
The agency disclosed that the seizure forms part of a broader nationwide operation that has resulted in multiple arrests and the interception of significant quantities of illicit drugs across different states. NDLEA officials reiterated that Nigeria remains committed to strengthening border security, disrupting international drug trafficking networks, and collaborating with regional and global partners to combat organized crime.
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), has consistently maintained that the agency will sustain intelligence led operations aimed at dismantling drug syndicates operating within and beyond Nigeria’s borders. The latest arrest underscores the agency’s continued efforts to safeguard public health, strengthen national security, and prevent Nigeria from being used as a transit hub for illegal narcotics.
Security analysts note that the interception reflects the increasing sophistication of airport screening systems and intelligence gathering by Nigerian anti drug authorities. They also stress the importance of sustained international cooperation to tackle the growing challenge of cross border drug trafficking across Africa.
