The North-East Development Commission (NEDC) has called on stakeholders in Taraba State to support its electric mobility initiative, which aims to reduce transportation costs, create employment opportunities and promote environmental sustainability.
The commission made the appeal, during a stakeholders’ sensitisation workshop in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, focused on the deployment and sustainable operation of electric mobility services.
Speaking on behalf of the NEDC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mohammed Goni Alkali, the commission’s Taraba State Coordinator, Adamu Lawal, urged participants to develop practical strategies for implementing the programme successfully.
The proposed initiative involves introducing electric buses, vehicles and tricycles to improve transportation services and strengthen connectivity between communities across the state.
According to the commission, electric mobility could provide economic opportunities for residents, particularly young people, through vehicle operations, technical maintenance and other services associated with the emerging electric transportation sector.
The initiative is also expected to help reduce emissions from conventional vehicles and support the development of a cleaner transportation system.
The NEDC said the programme aligns with key objectives of its North-East Stabilisation and Development Master Plan, particularly the promotion of regional connectivity and environmental protection.
However, the commission acknowledged that achieving these objectives would require coordinated efforts among government institutions, transport operators, energy-sector participants and other relevant stakeholders.
For the initiative to deliver lasting benefits, implementation will need to address practical considerations, including charging infrastructure, electricity supply, vehicle maintenance, technical training and affordability for transport operators and passengers.
The commission expressed confidence that effective collaboration would help translate the programme’s objectives into tangible economic and environmental benefits for Taraba residents.
The proposed electric mobility initiative represents another effort to modernise transportation across Nigeria’s North-East. Its long-term impact will depend on effective implementation, sustainable financing and the ability to deliver reliable and affordable services to communities.
The NEDC seeks stakeholder support for electric mobility in Taraba to reduce transport costs, create jobs, improve connectivity and promote environmental sustainability.
