In a significant move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic presence and global engagement, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the posting of 65 ambassadors and high commissioners to missions across the world. The appointments include 31 career diplomats and 34 non-career envoys, reflecting a balanced approach that combines professional diplomatic expertise with political and strategic representation.

The ambassadors-designate were confirmed by the Nigerian Senate in December, following the constitutional process required for such international appointments. Their deployment marks an important step in revitalizing Nigeria’s diplomatic missions and strengthening bilateral relations with countries across Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

The announcement, made by Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, also confirmed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has begun the induction programme for the newly appointed envoys, preparing them for their respective missions.

Strategic Global Representation

The newly approved list covers a wide spectrum of global destinations. Among the notable non-career ambassadorial postings are:

  • Senator Grace Bent – Togo

  • Senator Ita Enang – South Africa

  • Victor Ikpeazu – Spain

  • Nkechi Linda Ufochukwu – Israel

  • Mahmoud Yakubu – Qatar

  • Paul Oga Adikwu – The Vatican

  • Reno Omokri – Mexico

  • Lateef Kayode Are – United States

  • Femi Fani-Kayode – Germany

  • Ayodele Oke – France

  • Aminu Dalhatu – United Kingdom

These appointments represent a strategic deployment of experienced political leaders and technocrats to countries where Nigeria maintains important diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties.

At the same time, the career diplomatic corps has also been strengthened through new postings to missions including:

  • Belgium,Switzerland,Algeria,India,Ghana,Morocco,Netherlands,Lebanon,Malaysia,Tanzania, Senegal

These diplomats bring decades of experience from Nigeria’s foreign service and are expected to advance the country’s interests through professional diplomacy.

Nigeria–Italy Relations: A New Ambassador for Rome

Among the career diplomatic appointments is Ambassador Ruben Abimbola Samuel, who has been designated as Nigeria’s new Ambassador to Italy.

Italy remains one of Nigeria’s most strategic partners in Europe, particularly in areas such as: migration management ,trade and investment ,cultural exchange ,diaspora engagement ,development cooperation

Nigeria also maintains diplomatic representation to the Holy See (Vatican City), further strengthening its diplomatic footprint within Rome.

Ambassador Samuel’s forthcoming arrival in Rome signals a renewed focus on strengthening Nigeria–Italy relations, particularly in light of growing Nigerian communities across cities such as Rome, Milan, Turin, Bologna, and Naples.

His mission will include promoting economic diplomacy, protecting Nigerian citizens abroad, and strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two nations.

Strengthening Diaspora Services: The Role of the Immigration Attaché

Alongside diplomatic representation, an important pillar of Nigeria’s international presence lies in the work of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) within embassies and consulates.

In recent years, the Immigration Attaché at the Nigerian Embassy in Rome has played a crucial role in managing the growing demand for consular and immigration services among Nigerians living in Italy and neighboring countries.

The immigration unit is responsible for services such as:

  • passport issuance and renewal ,emergency travel certificates ,biometric capture  ,verification of citizenship ,coordination of immigration documentation

Despite the increasing demand for these services, the attaché’s office has demonstrated remarkable professionalism, resilience, and administrative efficiency.

Through improved organization, better scheduling of biometric appointments, and closer engagement with the Nigerian community, the office has been able to significantly enhance service delivery.

Many Nigerians in Italy have acknowledged the dedication and discipline of the immigration staff, particularly in managing the heavy workload associated with passport renewals.

Digital Transformation in Passport Services

Another major development that has improved diaspora services is the modernization of Nigeria’s passport system under the Nigeria Immigration Service.

Recent reforms include:

  • the introduction of online passport application portals ,digital payment systems ,improved biometric processing , the rollout of contactless passport renewal services for Nigerians abroad.

These innovations represent a major leap forward in Nigeria’s immigration administration. For Nigerians in Europe, including Italy, these reforms have reduced bureaucratic delays and improved transparency in passport processing. The efforts of immigration officials stationed at diplomatic missions have therefore been central to ensuring that these reforms translate into real improvements in service delivery for citizens abroad.

Diplomatic Leadership and Future Prospects

With the appointment of Ambassador Ruben Abimbola Samuel, Nigeria’s diplomatic mission in Rome is expected to enter a new phase of strengthened engagement with the Nigerian diaspora and Italian institutions.

The ambassador’s priorities will likely include:

  • strengthening Nigeria-Italy economic partnerships

  • promoting Nigerian culture and creative industries in Europe

  • supporting Nigerians living in Italy

  • collaborating with community organizations and diaspora media platforms

These objectives align with the broader foreign policy goals of the Tinubu administration, which has emphasized economic diplomacy, diaspora engagement, and international cooperation.

The Role of Diaspora Media and Community Platforms

As Nigeria strengthens its diplomatic presence abroad, diaspora media organizations also play an increasingly important role in bridging communication between governments and citizens.

Platforms such as Obaland Magazine, Obaland TV, and other community-based media initiatives help ensure that Nigerians in Europe remain informed about developments in their home country while also promoting African culture and achievements abroad.

Such media institutions can collaborate with diplomatic missions to:

  • disseminate official information to the Nigerian community

  • promote cultural diplomacy and integration

  • highlight Nigerian success stories in the diaspora

  • facilitate dialogue between government institutions and citizens abroad

Through these collaborations, Nigeria’s global image and diaspora engagement can be significantly strengthened.

Conclusion

The approval of new ambassadors by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu represents a major step in revitalizing Nigeria’s diplomatic presence worldwide.

With experienced diplomats and strategic political appointees now preparing to assume their posts, Nigeria is positioning itself to deepen international partnerships and expand its global influence.

At the same time, the dedication of immigration officials working within Nigerian missions abroad continues to ensure that citizens receive vital services such as passport renewal and documentation support.

As Ambassador Ruben Abimbola Samuel prepares to assume his role in Rome, there is renewed optimism that Nigeria’s diplomatic mission in Italy will further strengthen relations between the two countries while continuing to serve the growing Nigerian diaspora with professionalism and dedication.
