Nigeria Police Report: Over 29,000 Arrested for Various Crimes in One Year

 

In a recent report, the Nigeria Police Force revealed that a total of 29,000 suspects were apprehended across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory for a wide range of criminal offenses. The arrests were made as part of the police’s efforts to maintain the safety and security of Nigerians.

According to the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the suspects were arrested for crimes such as kidnapping, rape, murder, gun-running, cultism, and other offenses. Adejobi, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, provided a detailed breakdown of the arrests, highlighting the magnitude of each crime category.

Of the total number of arrests, 4,826 suspects were apprehended for armed robbery, 3,078 for kidnapping, and 2,479 for sexual offenses. Additionally, 1,243 suspects were nabbed for unlawful possession of firearms, 3,523 for cultism, 3,381 for murder or homicide, and 13,402 for various other offenses.

The report also highlighted the successful rescue of 1,750 kidnap victims in multiple operations. The police force was able to recover significant quantities of illegal items, including 2,566 firearms, 19,510 rounds of ammunition, and 1,475 vehicles/motorcycles, in their efforts to combat crime nationwide.

Adejobi further provided an update on the prosecution of criminal cases, stating that the Nigeria Police Force had successfully prosecuted 29,152 cases across the country within the year. Out of these cases, 17,679 had been conclusively dispensed with, while 11,576 were still undergoing trial. Additionally, 51 cases were under appeal at different appellate courts, and 16,200 convictions had been secured, with offenders serving various forms of punishment for their criminal acts.
