Members of the Tipper Drivers Association staged a protest and blocked the Uga-Onitsha-Asaba Expressway, leading to the River Niger Bridge, due to alleged extortions by agents of the Anambra and Delta state governments.
The drivers complained that they were being levied N2,700 in Delta State and an additional N3,000 in Anambra State after loading sand into their tippers.
This situation caused a gridlock on the expressway, with motorists stranded for several hours. The protesters argued that they should not be subjected to extortion, especially considering the poor state of the roads. Efforts by security personnel to dismantle the roadblock were resisted by the protesters.
