Former Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has lamented the state of education in Nigeria, saying the country is “paying a heavy price” due to neglect and underfunding of schools. Speaking at Igbobi College’s 94th Founders Day celebration, Osinbajo emphasized the importance of foundational education in shaping future leaders.
He shared his experiences at Igbobi College, highlighting the discipline and values instilled in him, which contributed to his success. Osinbajo stressed that habits formed in school are crucial for future leaders and urged corporate bodies, old students, and individuals to support education.
The event launched a ₦10 billion Endowment Fund to revitalize Igbobi College, with plans to build new hostels, enhance science laboratories, and introduce advanced technologies. Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, expressed support for the initiative, noting its potential to strengthen the leadership pipeline.
Osinbajo concluded that investing in schools is investing in Nigeria’s future, emphasizing the need for deliberate efforts to protect and develop educational institutions.
