NiMet Warns of Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned that parts of the country should prepare for three days of rain and thunderstorms starting Monday.

According to the outlook, many northern states including Kaduna, Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi, Zamfara, and Gombe will experience isolated thunderstorms and light rains in the mornings, with heavier rainfall expected later in the afternoons and evenings.

In the central region — covering Abuja, Niger, Nasarawa, Plateau, Benue, and Kogi — cloudy skies with sunshine intervals will give way to thunderstorms and moderate rainfall.

Southern states such as Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River should also brace for downpours and possible flash floods, particularly in flood-prone areas.

NiMet has advised:

Residents to drive carefully during the rains, stay away from tall trees, and disconnect appliances to avoid power surges.

Farmers not to apply fertilizers or pesticides just before rainfall to prevent nutrient wash-off.

Airline operators to obtain location-specific weather reports for safe flight operations.

Emergency agencies in states with flood risks are urged to remain on alert.
