The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have decided to suspend further protests following a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu after a meeting at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday came to an end.
Dele Alake, the spokesperson for President Tinubu, confirmed the decision, stating that the labour leaders expressed confidence in the President’s ability to address the concerns presented by the Labor Movement. Present at the meeting alongside the Labor leaders include Mr Mele Kyari, the Group Managing Director of NNPCL.
During the meeting, the commitment from President Tinubu was discussed saying that the Port Harcourt refineries would begin production by December 2023.
This comes as a result of the ongoing rehabilitation contract between the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPCL) and the Italian firm, Maire Tecnimont SpA.
Major cities across Nigeria experienced protests organized by the NLC and workers, primarily in response to the fuel subsidy removal. Although, with the commitment from the government, the Labor Movement decided to suspend further protests.
