On Tuesday, Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka revealed that he never anticipated living to the age of 90. He made this statement while interacting with 383 students who participated in the 2024 edition of the Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange Programme held at his residence in Abeokuta.
To celebrate Soyinka’s 90th birthday, the Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, announced scholarships and laptops for nine students who excelled in an essay competition. The event was organized to reflect on Soyinka’s legacy and promote cultural exchange and education.
During the interactive session, Prof. Soyinka shared insights from his life experiences and explained his decision to become a writer. He stated that his motivation was to address the inconsistencies he encountered in the stories he heard while growing up. When asked about his involvement in breaking into a radio station during the military era, Soyinka clarified that he had not broken in but had sneaked in to retrieve an item that belonged to the people. He emphasized the importance of self-reflection and criticized Nigerians for readily criticizing the state without examining themselves.
Soyinka also commended Governor Abiodun for his efforts in developing the environment around his residence and preserving it from degradation. He expressed his appreciation for these initiatives, which have contributed to his decision not to abandon the country.
Governor Abiodun highlighted the significance of engaging youth and orienting their goals towards progress for Nigeria and humanity. He stated that the Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange Programme aimed to honor Soyinka’s commitment to education, cultural exchange, and nurturing future leaders. The program includes an essay competition, advocacy, and performing arts.
The 2024 edition of the cultural exchange drew students from across the country who participated in the essay competition on national and international topics. The winners, including Alabi Oluwanifemi, Okoye Collins John, and Adebusi Adeoluwa, were rewarded with scholarships and laptops to encourage their writing skills and inspire others to participate in future editions.
The Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange Programme has been instrumental in upholding Soyinka’s ideals and vision for over 14 years. It promotes unity among mankind, regardless of nationality, culture, or religion, with a particular focus on the youth as the future of humanity.
