“NYSC Urges Corps Members to Harness Nigeria’s Diversity for National Unity and Sustainable Development”
The National Youth Service Corps has called on corps members across the country to embrace Nigeria’s cultural and ethnic diversity as a powerful tool for fostering national unity, peaceful coexistence, and long term development.
The appeal was made during the agency’s cultural carnival activities, where officials encouraged participants to see diversity not as a dividing factor, but as a national strength capable of deepening integration and strengthening social harmony across the country’s regions and communities.
According to NYSC officials, the cultural carnival remains one of the programme’s strategic platforms for promoting mutual understanding among young Nigerians from different ethnic, religious, and linguistic backgrounds. The initiative also aligns with the broader objectives of the scheme, which was established to encourage national cohesion and bridge socio-cultural gaps among the nation’s youth.
Speaking during the event, the scheme emphasized that corps members have a critical role to play in promoting peace, tolerance, and patriotism, especially at a time when Nigeria continues to confront security, economic, and social challenges. Participants were urged to use their service year to build meaningful relationships across cultural lines and contribute positively to community development projects nationwide.
The NYSC further noted that cultural exchange and inter ethnic collaboration are essential for sustainable national progress, stressing that young people remain central to Nigeria’s future stability and growth. The agency encouraged corps members to uphold values of discipline, respect, and unity throughout their service year.
Nigeria’s cultural diversity has long been regarded as one of Africa’s most significant social assets, with more than 250 ethnic groups and multiple indigenous languages contributing to the country’s rich heritage. Analysts say programmes that encourage intercultural interaction among youths continue to play an important role in nation-building efforts.
The NYSC cultural carnival also featured traditional dances, music, fashion displays, and exhibitions showcasing the customs and heritage of different Nigerian communities.
