Oba Ewuare II Vows to Preserve Oba Erediauwa’s Legacy at Memorial Lecture

The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has reaffirmed his commitment to preserving the intellectual, cultural and leadership legacy of his late father, Oba Erediauwa, describing his life and reign as an enduring source of inspiration for future generations.

The monarch made the commitment during the pre-inaugural lecture of the Oba Erediauwa Memorial Lecture Series, held at the University of Benin in Benin City on October. The event formed part of activities marking the 10th anniversary of Oba Ewuare II’s coronation.

Represented at the gathering by palace officials, the monarch conveyed his determination to sustain the values associated with his father’s reign, particularly scholarship, good governance, cultural preservation and responsible leadership.

According to reports by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the initiative is designed to preserve and promote the late monarch’s intellectual contributions while encouraging greater engagement with his ideas on governance, education, religion, the economy and public affairs.

Delivering the keynote lecture, historian Professor Osarhieme Osadolor called for greater recognition of Oba Erediauwa’s intellectual legacy, arguing that his writings and public engagements deserve sustained attention beyond the traditional institution.

The lecture, titled “Oba Erediauwa’s Voice in Discourse: Defining His Intellectual Legacy,” examined the late monarch’s contributions to public discourse and his approach to leadership.

Osadolor described Erediauwa as a philosopher king whose leadership reflected the importance of wisdom, public service and commitment to the common good. He stressed that studying the late monarch’s ideas could provide valuable lessons for contemporary leadership and governance.

Born Prince Solomon Igbinoghodua Akenzua on June 22, 1923, Oba Erediauwa studied law at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom before returning to Nigeria in 1952. He subsequently served in the public service, rising to the position of permanent secretary before retiring in 1973.

He ascended the Benin throne in March 1979 and reigned until his death in April 2016.

His intellectual contributions include his autobiography, I Remain, Your Obedient Servant, and The Cradle of Ideas, a collection of his speeches and writings published in 2013.

The establishment of the memorial lecture series represents an effort to ensure that Oba Erediauwa’s contributions remain accessible to scholars, students and younger generations interested in African history, traditional institutions and leadership.

Beyond commemorating the late monarch, the initiative provides an opportunity to examine the relationship between traditional authority, intellectual development and contemporary governance in Nigeria.

The event also highlighted the importance of preserving indigenous knowledge and documenting the contributions of African traditional rulers to public life. Such initiatives can strengthen historical awareness while encouraging informed discussions about cultural identity, institutional continuity and leadership accountability.

The programme was organised as part of activities marking Oba Ewuare II’s 10th coronation anniversary. According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the formal inauguration of the memorial lecture series has been scheduled for March 23, 2027, the anniversary of Oba Erediauwa’s coronation.

Former Edo State Deputy Governor Lucky Imasuen, who chairs the Oba Ewuare II 10th Coronation Anniversary Committee, also urged participants to uphold the late monarch’s values, particularly his commitment to scholarship, good governance and cultural preservation.

For the Benin Kingdom, the memorial lecture offers an opportunity to connect historical memory with contemporary responsibilities. Its lasting significance, however, will depend on sustained scholarly engagement, public participation and the continued preservation of Oba Erediauwa’s writings and ideas.

As Oba Ewuare II continues his reign, the initiative underscores the enduring relevance of the late monarch’s legacy and the responsibility of successive generations to preserve the intellectual and cultural foundations of the Benin Kingdom.
