Oba of Benin Hosts Shallipopi, Praises Singer for Promoting Edo Culture

The Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, has offered prayers and royal blessings to Afrobeats star Crown Uzama, popularly known as Shallipopi, during the singer’s recent visit to the Benin Palace in Benin City.

The revered monarch commended the Edo-born artiste for promoting the cultural heritage of the Benin Kingdom through his music, noting that his efforts have positively projected the image of Edo people globally.

Oba Ewuare II, while receiving the artiste, disclosed that Shallipopi enjoys a strong fan base within the palace, a remark that drew excitement from those in attendance.

Offering prayers for the singer, the monarch invoked divine protection and ancestral guidance upon him, while also praying for continued peace and prosperity for the Benin Kingdom and Edo people at home and in the diaspora.

The Oba further hinted that Shallipopi may be among performers at activities marking his 10th coronation anniversary scheduled for October 2026.

During the visit, Shallipopi, accompanied by members of his entourage, including fellow artistes and associates, paid homage to the Benin throne in line with tradition.

The atmosphere became lively when the singer performed an a cappella version of one of his hit songs, which was warmly received by an enthusiastic audience at the palace.

Guests were also treated to traditional Benin dance performances by palace chiefs and royal drummers, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the kingdom.

The visit highlighted the growing intersection between contemporary music and traditional institutions, as well as the role of creative arts in preserving and promoting cultural identity.
