The Edo State Government has rejected allegations by former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party figure, Peter Obi, that members of his political camp were attacked by government officials during recent events in the state.
In a statement, the government described the allegation as false, malicious and a misrepresentation of facts, insisting that no directive was issued by Governor Monday Okpebholo or any arm of the state government to target members of any political party.
The statement said the administration would not engage in actions capable of endangering innocent Nigerians, regardless of political affiliation, and maintained that the claims lack credible evidence.
The government recalled the governor’s earlier remarks regarding high-profile political visits to the state, noting that his position was guided strictly by security considerations in his capacity as Chief Security Officer of Edo State.
According to the statement, the governor had emphasised that politically exposed persons are expected to notify relevant authorities ahead of major public engagements to enable proper security coordination in the interest of public safety.
It further described attempts to interpret the governor’s security advisory as intimidation or orchestrated attacks as misleading and politically motivated.
The statement also referenced an internal dispute within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), alleging that a faction led by former Senate Chief Whip Roland Owie was denied access to a meeting at the residence of former Edo State Governor, John Odigie-Oyegun, before security operatives intervened to restore order.
The Edo State Government urged political actors to verify facts before making public statements that could heighten tension, reaffirming its commitment to public safety, constitutional rights and economic development.
It added that the administration remains focused on governance and not political persecution.
