“Ogun ADC Crisis Deepens as Party Leadership Validates State Congress, Rejects Rival ‘Apex Committee”
The Ogun State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reaffirmed the legitimacy of its recently conducted state congress and candidate screening process, firmly distancing the party from a rival structure described as an unauthorized “Apex Committee.” The development underscores growing internal tensions within the opposition party ahead of Nigeria’s evolving political realignments.
In an official statement issued by the state leadership, the Ogun ADC chairman maintained that the congress followed due constitutional procedures and was supervised in line with the party’s national guidelines. According to the leadership, all outcomes from the congress including executive selections and screening decisions remain valid and binding on members across the state.
The party also declared that the so.called Apex Committee has no constitutional backing within the ADC framework, labeling it “null and void.” Officials argued that the group neither received recognition from the national leadership nor emerged through any legally sanctioned party process. The state executives warned members and stakeholders against engaging with parallel structures capable of creating confusion among party supporters.
Political observers note that internal disputes within Nigerian political parties are not uncommon during periods of organizational restructuring and pre-election positioning. Analysts say such conflicts often revolve around leadership legitimacy, control of party structures, and candidate nomination processes issues that can significantly influence grassroots mobilization and electoral strategy.
While the Ogun ADC leadership insists the matter has been settled internally, calls for reconciliation persist among party stakeholders who fear prolonged factional disagreements could weaken the party’s competitiveness in future elections. Efforts to maintain unity, analysts suggest, will likely depend on intervention from the national leadership and adherence to transparent dispute-resolution mechanisms.
The African Democratic Congress, which has positioned itself as an alternative political platform advocating governance reforms and broader democratic participation, has experienced periodic internal disagreements in several states as it expands its organizational footprint nationwide.
As of press time, representatives linked to the disputed Apex Committee had yet to issue a detailed public response to the latest declaration by the Ogun State executive.
