Ogun Assembly Clears Former Speaker Olakunle Oluomo of Embezzlement Allegations, Converts Impeachment to Resignation.
The Ogun State House of Assembly has exonerated former Speaker Olakunle Oluomo from allegations of embezzlement, while commuting his previous impeachment to a resignation.
The development marks a significant turn in the controversy surrounding Oluomo’s removal from office. The former Speaker was initially impeached by lawmakers over allegations that included financial misappropriation, high handedness, poor leadership and other alleged acts of misconduct.
Reports by Channels Television and The Guardian Nigeria had earlier documented the Assembly’s 2024 decision to remove Oluomo as Speaker after lawmakers considered allegations against him. The Assembly subsequently elected Oludaisi Elemide as his replacement.
The latest decision, however, changes the official legislative position regarding the embezzlement allegations against Oluomo, effectively clearing him of that charge and treating his departure from the speakership as a resignation rather than an impeachment.
The development is also notable against the backdrop of a separate legal and criminal case involving the former Speaker. In 2022, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Oluomo and other defendants before a Federal High Court in Lagos over alleged financial crimes involving funds linked to the Ogun State House of Assembly. The case was reported by Channels Television at the time, with Oluomo granted bail as legal proceedings continued.
The Assembly’s latest action is therefore expected to renew public interest in the distinction between legislative disciplinary proceedings and criminal allegations that are subject to judicial determination. While the House has now exonerated Oluomo in relation to the embezzlement allegations that formed part of the earlier impeachment controversy, any separate court proceedings remain matters for the judiciary to determine based on evidence and due process.
The decision underscores the evolving political and legal dimensions of the former Speaker’s removal and could further shape public debate over accountability, legislative procedure and the separation of powers within Nigeria’s democratic institute.
