Ogun Border Community Residents Return Home After Devastating Flood
Residents of Ogun border communities, displaced by the recent flood triggered by the unexpected release of water from the Oyan Dam, are gradually returning home. The flood, which affected areas like Isheri, OPIC, Arepo, Warewa, and nearby regions, caused significant damage to properties, prompting an outcry that caught the attention of both state and federal governments.
After over four weeks of havoc, the water has receded, allowing residents and business owners to return. Kehinde Lawal, a property owner, described the experience as traumatic, noting damages running into millions of naira, including a car, sofa, generator, and inverter batteries. Another resident, Olujimi Tella, shared losses exceeding N10 million, emphasizing the devastating impact on his home appliances.
While some residents moved to hotels during the crisis, others have chosen not to return, putting their properties up for sale. Landlords in the area are urging the state government to address the situation comprehensively, emphasizing the potential for Internally Generated Revenue in the community. Chairman of Riverview Estate in Isheri, Abayomi Akinde, stressed the importance of the government fulfilling promises to find a lasting solution to the problem.
