Oluebube Umejiaku Makes History as Nigeria’s Golden Ball Winner at 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria’s rising football star, Oluebube Umejiaku, has been crowned the best player of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after winning the prestigious adidas Golden Ball award in Morocco.
The young Nigerian forward received the individual honour on November 7, 2026, following an outstanding performance that helped the Flamingos secure their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title.
Umejiaku played a decisive role in Nigeria’s historic campaign, particularly in the final against Japan, where she scored the winning goal to secure a 2-1 victory at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat.
Nigeria opened the scoring through Awawu Bashiru in the 39th minute before Umejiaku doubled the advantage just two minutes into the second half. Japan reduced the deficit through Fuki Ito in the 80th minute, but the Flamingos maintained their lead until the final whistle.
Her goal in the final took her tournament tally to four, further strengthening her claim to the Golden Ball award. She was also named Player of the Match in the decisive encounter.
Umejiaku’s journey at the tournament was particularly remarkable. Having started Nigeria’s opening match against Poland from the bench, she gradually established herself as one of the team’s most influential players. Despite Nigeria losing that opening fixture 2-1, the forward continued to make important contributions as the team recovered and progressed through the competition.
Her performances helped Nigeria overcome several strong opponents, including defending champions DPR Korea, Mexico, Venezuela and Brazil, before defeating Japan in the final.
The Golden Ball recognition also places Umejiaku among the emerging talents attracting international attention in women’s football.
Meanwhile, DPR Korea’s Yu Jong hyang finished second in the individual best player rankings, receiving the Silver Ball, while Japan’s Fuki Ito claimed the Bronze Ball.
The tournament’s Golden Boot went to United States forward Maddie DiMaria, who finished as the highest goal scorer with 12 goals despite her country’s quarter-final elimination. DPR Korea goalkeeper Kim Son gyong received the Golden Glove, while Japan won the FIFA Fair Play Trophy.
Beyond Umejiaku’s individual achievement, Nigeria’s triumph represents a landmark moment for African women’s football. The Flamingos became the first African nation to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, bringing the continent its first title in the competition’s history.
The victory also demonstrates the growing potential of women’s football in Africa and the importance of sustained investment in youth development, grassroots programmes and opportunities for young female athletes.
For Nigeria, Umejiaku’s Golden Ball award is an additional celebration of a historic campaign, while her emergence offers fresh inspiration to young girls aspiring to compete at the highest levels of international football.
