Osun Decides 2026: Student Group Applauds Tinubu, Congratulates Adeleke on Re Election Victory.
A student focused group has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what it described as his commitment to democratic principles and congratulated Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke following his victory in the August 15, 2026 governorship election.
The group’s position comes after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Adeleke of the Accord Party the winner of the closely contested Osun governorship poll, securing a second term in office. Adeleke defeated his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The election was contested by candidates from 15 political parties, although the major contest centred largely on Adeleke and Oyebamiji. According to results reported after the final collation, Adeleke secured 511,067 votes against Oyebamiji’s 444,815, giving the incumbent a margin of 66,252 votes.
The student group said Tinubu’s role in maintaining democratic stability deserved recognition, while urging political actors and citizens to respect the outcome of the election and prioritize governance over partisan divisions.
The commendation also reflects the changing political dynamics in Osun, where student and youth organisations had become increasingly visible in the build-up to the election. Earlier in the campaign season, student leaders and youth stakeholders publicly engaged with issues surrounding education, governance and Adeleke’s re election bid.
Adeleke’s victory was recorded across 19 of Osun’s 30 Local Government Areas, while APC candidate Oyebamiji won 11 LGAs. The outcome gives Adeleke another four-year mandate after his first term, which began in 2022.
The result also marks a significant development for the Accord Party, which provided the platform for Adeleke’s second-term campaign. His re election came after months of intense political mobilisation, legal disputes and competing claims by the major parties over their prospects in the state.
Beyond the political victory, the student group called for the new administration to translate the electoral mandate into tangible improvements in education, youth development, employment opportunities and social welfare.
For students and young Nigerians, the significance of the election extends beyond the outcome itself. The participation of youth and student groups highlights the growing importance of young voters in Nigeria’s electoral politics and the need for governments to respond to their concerns through measurable policies and inclusive governance.
