Otti Honours FUTO Vice Chancellor With Naming of Umuahia Central Bus Terminal”

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has named the newly completed Umuahia Central Bus Terminal after the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Professor Nnenna Nnannaya Oti, in recognition of her role during Nigeria’s 2023 general elections and what the governor described as her “integrity, courage, and commitment to democratic values.”

The announcement was made during the inauguration of the modern transport facility in Umuahia, the Abia State capital. Governor Otti stated that Professor Nnannaya Oti demonstrated uncommon professionalism and patriotism while serving as the Returning Officer for the 2023 Abia State governorship election, a contest that eventually produced him as governor under the Labour Party platform.

According to Otti, the decision to immortalize the academic administrator was intended to celebrate integrity in public service and encourage Nigerians, particularly women and young professionals, to uphold transparency and accountability in leadership positions. The governor noted that the Vice Chancellor resisted pressure and remained committed to due process despite the tense political atmosphere surrounding the election.

Professor Nnenna Nnannaya Oti gained national attention in March 2023 after presiding over the collation and declaration of Abia governorship election results. Her conduct during the process drew commendations from civil society groups, political observers, and several Nigerians on social media, many of whom praised her calmness and adherence to electoral guidelines amid mounting pressure from political actors.

The newly inaugurated Umuahia Central Bus Terminal is part of the Abia State Government’s broader urban renewal and transportation reform agenda aimed at improving public transit infrastructure, reducing congestion, and modernizing commercial mobility within the state. Officials say the facility is expected to enhance transportation efficiency and support economic activities in Umuahia and surrounding communities.

Political analysts view the naming gesture as symbolic, reflecting growing public appreciation for individuals perceived to have defended electoral credibility during Nigeria’s democratic process. Supporters of the governor have also described the move as recognition of ethical leadership in governance and public administration.

While reactions to the development continue across political and civic circles, observers note that the decision further reinforces the national profile of Professor Nnannaya Oti, whose role in the 2023 election remains one of the most discussed moments in Abia’s recent political history.
