“Otti Unveils ‘Made in Aba’ Initiative, Empowers 8,000 Fashion Graduates to Drive Local Industry Growth”

In a strategic move aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s local manufacturing sector, Abia State Governor Alex Otti has officially launched a “Made in Aba” campaign while announcing the empowerment of 8,000 fashion graduates across the state.

The initiative, unveiled in Aba widely regarded as one of West Africa’s largest commercial and manufacturing hubs seeks to strengthen indigenous entrepreneurship, boost job creation, and position locally made products for both national and international markets. Governor Otti emphasized that the programme is part of a broader economic transformation agenda designed to harness the region’s long-standing reputation for craftsmanship, particularly in textiles, footwear, and leather works.

According to state officials, the empowerment scheme will provide fashion graduates with access to modern equipment, training, funding support, and market linkages. The goal is to transition thousands of skilled youths from informal operations into structured, scalable businesses capable of competing globally. Analysts note that Aba’s thriving informal sector has historically contributed significantly to Nigeria’s manufacturing output, despite facing challenges such as infrastructure deficits and limited access to finance.

Governor Otti reiterated his administration’s commitment to addressing these structural barriers, highlighting ongoing investments in road networks, power supply, and business-friendly policies. He also called on private sector stakeholders and development partners to collaborate in expanding the reach of the “Made in Aba” brand, which aims to redefine perceptions of locally manufactured goods.

Economic observers view the initiative as a timely intervention, especially amid Nigeria’s push for import substitution and industrial self-reliance. By scaling up local production and supporting small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), the programme could play a critical role in reducing unemployment and strengthening the country’s non-oil economy.

The “Made in Aba” campaign aligns with broader national efforts to promote local content and enhance the global competitiveness of Nigerian products. If effectively implemented, it could serve as a model for regional industrialization across Africa.
