Outrage in Amassoma as Final-Year Student of Niger Delta University Stabbed to Death over N150 Levy

 

Amassoma, a community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, is currently in a state of outrage following the tragic stabbing to death of Francis Palowei, a final-year student of the Niger Delta University. The incident occurred on Monday at the Sand Dump, a popular spot for relaxation and socializing among students.

According to sources within the community, Palowei was attacked by some youths in the area when he refused to give them N150. The victim, who hailed from Obrigbene community in the Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, was scheduled to graduate on July 24, 2024, during the university’s next convocation ceremony.

In response to the incident, the Nigeria Police Force has deployed personnel to the community to search for the perpetrators. Students of the institution have also joined in the search, while the shock of the incident has caused some students to avoid attending classes. However, the majority of students continue to attend classes as academic activities remain unaffected.

Indoni Engezi, the Public Relations Officer of the university, confirmed the incident and emphasized that it primarily affected the host community of Amassoma. Engezi stated that the university itself is a separate community and that academic activities are proceeding as usual. He also noted that the police are actively involved in handling the situation.

Musa Mohammed, the Police Public Relations Officer, announced that the Commissioner of Police, Francis Idu, has deployed additional manpower to Amassoma to maintain peace and security. The police have launched a manhunt for the killers and are determined to bring them to justice.

The Sand Dump, where the incident took place, is known for not charging any fees for its use.
