Ovia North East Council Debunks Viral Massacre Report, Urges Residents to Ignore Fake News

The Chairman of Ovia North East Local Government Area, Hon. Omoruyi Igbinake, has dismissed as false and misleading a viral social media report alleging that a massacre recently occurred in a community within the council area.

In a statement issued by his office, the council said there is no ongoing incident of massacre in any part of Ovia North East, stressing that communities across the local government remain peaceful, with residents carrying out their normal activities without fear.

According to the statement, investigations revealed that the videos and images being circulated online are not recent but originated from an unfortunate incident that occurred on February 19, 2021.

The council described the recirculation of the old footage as current events as a deliberate attempt to spread misinformation, create panic, and destabilize the peace enjoyed in the area.

Hon. Igbinake urged members of the public, media organizations, and social media users to verify information before sharing it, warning against the dangers of fake news.

He assured residents that security agencies in the local government remain vigilant and committed to safeguarding lives and property.

The chairman also appealed to residents to remain law-abiding and not allow purveyors of false information to cause unnecessary tension in the area.

He encouraged anyone with genuine security concerns to contact the council authorities or the nearest security agency.
