The Oyo State Government has announced plans to conduct safety inspections on buildings in the Ojugbede Jegede area of Ogbere, Ibadan, after a building collapse on Thursday led to 10 fatalities and seven rescues.
The collapsed structure reportedly belonged to an 80-year-old man named Babare Lamidi, who tragically lost five of his grandchildren in the incident. Security personnel have cordoned off the area to ensure public safety.
An eyewitness stated that officials, led by the Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development, pledged to perform structural integrity tests on nearby buildings to prevent further tragedies. Authorities noted that the building was in a deteriorated condition, contributing to its collapse and the resulting loss of life.
The Commissioner of Police confirmed that 10 individuals died, while eight others are in critical condition. Security measures are now in place to safeguard the area and protect residents.
The state’s Fire Services Department reported receiving a distress call around 2 a.m., allowing rescue teams to recover 10 bodies and rescue nine people from the debris. Search and rescue operations continue as officials work to determine the causes of the collapse.
