“Papaya Ex Rejects Police Resistance Claims, Alleges Assault During Lagos Stop and Search Operation.”

LAGOS, Nigeria
Nigerian social media influencer Papaya Ex has dismissed allegations that she failed to cooperate with law enforcement officers, maintaining that she was assaulted during a routine stop and search operation in Lagos.
Papaya Ex, whose real name is Raheem Abike  Halimah, addressed the incident in a video posted to her verified social media accounts, stating that she complied with officers’ instructions and had no intention of obstructing their duties. “I just want to make movies, not fight police,” she said, rejecting claims that she resisted arrest or engaged in confrontational behavior.
According to her account, the encounter began when police officers stopped her vehicle and requested a search. While she acknowledged that stop and search procedures are part of routine policing, she alleged that the situation escalated despite her cooperation, resulting in physical assault and injuries.
As of press time, the Nigeria Police Force had not issued a detailed public statement outlining its version of events. However, sources within the Lagos State command reiterated that officers are required to conduct stop and search operations in line with professional standards, constitutional safeguards, and internal operational guidelines.
The incident has generated significant public reaction, reigniting debate over police conduct and accountability in Nigeria. Concerns surrounding stop and search procedures remain particularly sensitive following the 2020 #EndSARS protests, which were sparked by widespread allegations of abuse by the now disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
Legal experts note that while Nigerian law obliges citizens to comply with lawful directives from security personnel, law enforcement officers are equally bound by constitutional provisions that prohibit excessive use of force and protect fundamental human rights.
Coverage by The Punch, Vanguard, and Premium Times has highlighted both Papaya Ex’s allegations and the broader public discourse on police civilian relations in Lagos and across Nigeria.
Analysts say the unfolding situation underscores the continued urgency of institutional reform within Nigeria’s security architecture, as authorities work to strengthen public trust while ensuring that officers can carry out their duties effectively and lawfully.
As investigations continue, stakeholders across civil society and government are calling for transparency, due process, and accountability to ensure that the facts are clearly established and that any proven misconduct is addressed in accordance with the law.
