Former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State and senatorial candidate for Ebonyi South in the February 2024 rerun election, Barrister Silas Joseph Onu, has formally resigned his membership from the PDP.
Onu’s decision was conveyed in a resignation letter dated Wednesday, addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman in Obiozara, and made available to the press on Thursday.
In the letter, the legal practitioner and outspoken party figure cited “irreconcilable differences” and the “meddle-someness of a few sitting governors” in party affairs as major reasons for his exit. He described the prevailing atmosphere within the PDP as stifling to internal democracy and personal conviction.
“It’s with a heavy heart, yet for a more patriotic reason, that I am resigning my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the letter read.
“Due to some irreconcilable differences, especially the role being played by a few sitting governors of the party, I am compelled to pursue my political aspirations from a different, but stable platform.”
Onu, who had previously served as the State Publicity Secretary and later the substantive State Chairman of the PDP in Ebonyi, said his move is not personal but driven by a higher call to build a more credible alternative.
He has now declared allegiance to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the emerging coalition platform recently adopted by a group of opposition heavyweights including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Nasir el-Rufai, among others, in anticipation of the 2027 general elections.
Silas Onu also urged his supporters and political associates to join him in the ADC, stating that the platform offers “a more promising future for purposeful leadership and genuine service.”
“I thank all members of the PDP who stood with me through my journey. I urge you to follow me into the ADC so we can build a stronger and more people-focused political movement.”
Onu’s defection is seen as a significant shift within the political landscape of Ebonyi State, and may potentially bolster the profile of the ADC in the South-East region ahead of 2027.
