People with tattoos may be at an increased risk of developing blood cancers, particularly lymphoma, according to oncologists and hematologists. These experts have cautioned Nigerians about the potential health risks associated with getting tattoos.

They explain that certain chemicals found in tattoo inks, such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons, have carcinogenic properties that can contribute to the development of blood cancers. When these inks are injected into the skin, they can migrate into the lymphatic system and reach the lymph nodes, leading to genetic damage and cellular changes that can result in lymphoma.

The risk of developing blood cancers from tattoos is higher for individuals who have tattoos placed near lymph nodes, such as the neck, armpits, and groin, as these areas have a higher absorption rate for the chemicals in the inks. The quality of the ink and the tattooing process also play a role in increasing the risk. Cheaper inks with more impurities may pose a greater risk.People with tattoos may end up with blood cancers – Experts

The experts emphasize the need for stricter regulations within the tattoo industry to ensure safe ink compositions, professional practices, and post-tattoo health assessments. They call on the government and relevant agencies to enforce standards that protect consumers and promote safety. It is important for individuals considering tattoos to be aware of the potential risks and to inquire about the chemical constituents of the inks used.

By opting for safer alternatives and making informed choices, individuals can minimize potential health hazards associated with tattoos.
