Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his ambition to contest the 2027 presidential election, debunking rumours that he may settle for a vice-presidential slot under former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or any other candidate.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme, Obi dismissed the speculation, insisting that no such conversation has taken place.
Obi also clarified his participation in the ongoing opposition coalition talks, which recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform ahead of 2027. He stressed that the move was not a departure from the Labour Party or an act of political disloyalty.
Responding to concerns over his association with certain controversial political figures within the coalition, Obi maintained that national leadership demands inclusivity and a capacity to work with diverse stakeholders.
The former Anambra State governor also took a swipe at the administration of President Bola Tinubu, criticising its governance style and economic management. He pledged to offer Nigerians a disciplined, transparent, and competent leadership if elected president in 2027.
His comments come amid intensified opposition mobilisation for 2027, with leaders from various political backgrounds engaging in talks to build a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Political analysts say Obi’s firm declaration and the ongoing coalition efforts signal a potentially heated contest in 2027, as public discontent over the economy and governance performance under the current administration continues to rise.
