“Peter Obi Urges Diaspora Africans to Champion Credible Elections and Democratic Accountability”
Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on Africans living in the diaspora to actively support the promotion of credible elections, good governance, and democratic accountability across the continent.
Speaking during an engagement with members of the African diaspora, Obi emphasized that millions of Africans abroad possess significant influence through their expertise, advocacy, and global networks. He urged them to use their voices to encourage transparent electoral processes and accountable leadership in their countries of origin.
According to Obi, sustainable development in Africa depends on institutions that uphold the rule of law, protect the integrity of elections, and ensure leaders are chosen through free, fair, and transparent democratic processes. He noted that diaspora communities can contribute by supporting civic education, encouraging electoral reforms, and promoting policies that strengthen democratic institutions.
The former Anambra State governor also stressed that the future of Africa requires collective responsibility, urging citizens both at home and abroad to remain engaged in national development and governance. He maintained that active participation by the diaspora can help reinforce democratic values and inspire greater accountability among political leaders.
Political analysts have consistently highlighted the growing role of African diaspora communities in shaping governance through advocacy, investment, policy engagement, and election observation. Their contributions, observers say, remain vital to strengthening democratic institutions and fostering sustainable development across the continent.
