Police Arrest Streetlight Pole Vandal in Enugu

In a significant step towards enhancing public safety and preserving community infrastructure, the Enugu State Police Command has successfully apprehended a suspect involved in the theft of a streetlight pole in the New Artisan area of Enugu. The individual, identified as Aliyu Saad, faces charges related to this criminal act following a swift police operation.

According to a statement released by Deputy Superintendent of Police Daniel Ndukwe, the Police Public Relations Officer, the arrest took place in the early hours of August 14, 2024, around 4:30 a.m. Local police operatives from the New Haven Division acted on credible information that led them to the scene, where they found Saad in the act of uprooting the streetlight pole.

Following his arrest, Saad was charged in the Enugu North Magistrates’ Court on August 14 2024, and has since been remanded in the Correctional Custodial Centre in Enugu, awaiting further court proceedings. This incident highlights the ongoing efforts of the Enugu State Police to combat vandalism and other criminal activities that threaten public safety and infrastructure.

The police’s proactive measures come as a direct response to recent directives from the Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu. He has emphasized the need for law enforcement to intensify their operations against individuals who are determined to vandalize public properties. In his statement, CP Uzuegbu urged police operatives to remain vigilant and dedicated in their pursuit of justice, while also calling on citizens to play their part by reporting suspicious activities to the police.
