Three members of the Adamawa State Police Command have been detained on suspicion of being involved in the alleged extrajudicial killings of two women.
The impacted cops were said to have been engaged with the episode prompting the passing of the ladies by a furious crowd over claims of black magic.
According to reports, the state Commissioner of Police, Afolabi Babatola, was shocked by the unprofessional behavior of the police officers who were seen in a viral video molesting and abusing three women who were accused of witchcraft alongside vigilantes and a mob.
In the end, two of the women were killed in the video, which showed the mob stripping them and beating them mercilessly.
The actions of the police officers were deemed to be “unfortunate” by Babatola, who issued the order to detain everyone who could be seen in the video, including the officers.
In a statement that was made available to journalists on Sunday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, disclosed the arrest of the three policemen who were seen in the viral video as well as 10 other individuals. He was said to have deployed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, who arrested those who were seen maltreating and assaulting the victim. He said, ” The lamentable killing of two ladies blamed for black magic by a horde in Roma, has been denounced by the Police Magistrate, CP Afolabi Babatola, saying the Adamawa State Police Order went over a sad video which has turned into a web sensation in some part of the media, particularly virtual entertainment where a Reviewer of Police and a few individuals from vigilantes connected to the Dumne Divisional Police Base camp were located abusing and attacking three ladies in an amateurish way at Roma people group, Dumne Improvement Region in the Melody Nearby Government Region.
“Due to the allegation of witchcraft, the women were stripped naked and beaten mercilessly by the mob, resulting in the brutal murders of two of them.
“Irked by the unfortunate incident, the Commissioner of Police immediately deployed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, who arrested those who were observed physically and sexually abusing the women.
In addition, “the CP has ordered a thorough investigation into the immediate and distant cause(s) of this condemnable incident” in order to “ensure the rapid dispensation of justice.”
In the statement, the CP also assured all stakeholders that anyone found guilty of a crime would undoubtedly be brought to justice, and that he would not tolerate any act of indifference or disregard for the law.
