The Edo State Police Command has dismissed allegations of corruption and misconduct leveled against the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Aideyan Division, CSP Adesuwa Omoruyi, describing the claims as false and misleading.

The allegations, reportedly made by a group known as the “Freedom Ambassadors Organization,” accused the DPO of aiding the escape of a suspect involved in a bigamy case and engaging in corrupt practices.

However, in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, the Command clarified that its officers acted strictly within the confines of the law and standard policing procedures.

According to the statement, the Aideyan Division received a complaint on March 12, 2026, alleging that one Ajayi Patrick was planning to contract a marriage at the Federal Marriage Registry on March 14, despite being in an existing marital union.

Police operatives were immediately deployed to the venue following a distress call. During preliminary investigations, the complainant, identified as Igho Joy, was asked to provide documentary evidence, including a marriage certificate, to establish a prima facie case of bigamy.

The Command explained that while investigations were ongoing, the suspect was granted bail in line with standard police procedure, as the alleged offence is bailable. A surety, identified as Enabulele Sampson, 64, was mandated to produce the suspect at the station on March 17.

However, the surety failed to meet the bail conditions, leading to his arrest. Further investigations revealed that the suspect had fled the country to Canada in an attempt to evade justice.

The Police said it has since contacted the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) to facilitate the tracking and arrest of the fleeing suspect.

The Command added that the surety is being arraigned before a competent court to show cause why the bail bond should not be forfeited.

Reiterating its stance, the Police maintained that no officer acted outside the law at any stage of the case and urged the public to disregard the allegations.

Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and diligent investigation of all cases.
