In a remarkable display of bravery and coordination, the Katsina State Police Command successfully thwarted a kidnapping attempt on Saturday, August 19, 2024, on the Magama-Katsina Road. The incident, which unfolded late at night, involved a group of armed assailants, reportedly terrorists, who set upon unsuspecting travelers in a brazen attack.
According to a statement released by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Abubakar Sadiq, the incident occurred around 11:15 PM when the assailants, armed with AK-47 rifles, blocked the Kukar Babangida bridge. They targeted a J5 motor vehicle carrying several occupants, forcefully abducting seven individuals and subsequently setting the vehicle ablaze.
Upon receiving the distress call, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at the Jibia Divisional Headquarters took immediate action by mobilizing a team of police operatives. This team worked in collaboration with members of the Katsina State Community Watch Corps and local vigilantes to respond swiftly to the scene.
The police unit, through their swift and strategic efforts, managed to track down the kidnappers as they attempted to escape with their captives. A fierce gun battle ensued between the police and the armed assailants, resulting in the successful rescue of all seven victims. However, one individual sustained a gunshot wound to the shoulder during the altercation. This victim was promptly transported to a nearby hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.
The Commissioner of Police for Katsina State, CP Aliyu Abubakar Musa, expressed his admiration for the bravery displayed by his officers during this operation.
