The Ogun State Police Command has launched a thorough investigation into the tragic murder of a 16-year-old boy, Jamilu Lasisi, who lost his life during a football match in the Ibegba area of Sagamu Local Government. This incident has sparked significant concern within the community and raised questions about youth safety during recreational activities.
According to police reports, a suspect identified as Alex Eziochukwu has been taken into custody in connection with the alleged murder. The investigation commenced following an incident that occurred on Tuesday, where an argument between Lasisi and Eziochukwu escalated into a confrontation on the football pitch. Eyewitness accounts indicate that during the altercation, Lasisi collapsed, prompting immediate action from those present.
The police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, provided details regarding the events leading up to the arrest. She noted that law enforcement received a tip-off around 4:00 AM on Wednesday, which ultimately led to Eziochukwu’s apprehension. The confrontation reportedly arose from a disagreement during the game, which quickly turned violent.
After falling unconscious, Jamilu Lasisi was rushed to Owokoniran Hospital in GRA Sagamu. Tragically, despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was declared dead upon arrival. The confirmation of his death led to a swift response from the police, who initiated a manhunt for the suspect, who had fled the scene immediately after the incident.
Odutola recounted the sequence of events, stating, “A phone call was received from one Tobi Olarewaju, who reported that his nephew, Jamilu Lasisi, was playing football in the area when an argument ensued with another player. He fell unconscious and was taken to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead.”
In the wake of the incident, detectives were dispatched to the area to conduct a thorough search for Eziochukwu, but initial efforts to locate him were unsuccessful. It wasn’t until Wednesday morning that police were able to apprehend the suspect.
As the investigation continues, the police are working diligently to gather more information regarding the circumstances surrounding the confrontation and the events that led to the young boy’s tragic death. The body of Jamilu Lasisi has been moved from the hospital to the mortuary as part of the ongoing procedures.
This incident has not only left a family grieving but has also raised critical discussions about violence in sports and the need for better conflict resolution among youths. Community leaders and residents are calling for measures to ensure safer environments for young people, particularly during recreational activities
