President Tinubu Launches Nigeria Police Force Green Initiative, Prioritizing Environmental Sustainability

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended the Nigeria Police Green Initiative, emphasizing that it will not only mitigate the effects of climate change and promote eco-friendly practices, but also prioritize innovation and partnerships that will drive the nation’s transition to a green economy.

The President, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, made these remarks during the official launch of the Nigeria Police Force Green Initiative at the Police Resource Centre in Jabi, Abuja on Friday

The Nigeria Police Green Initiative, an initiative developed by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), aims to promote environmental sustainability within the force’s operations and facilities. It seeks to reduce the environmental impact of their activities through the implementation of eco-friendly practices and the adoption of renewable energy sources.

In his address, Vice President Shettima highlighted the global realities of climate change and its consequences, stating that no part of the world can feign ignorance of this threat. He emphasized the need for collective action to implement solutions.

President Tinubu expressed his delight at the initiative, stating that Nigeria has always been at the forefront of finding solutions to the devastations caused by climate change. He reiterated the country’s commitment to aligning with international climate goals and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The President emphasized the connection between climate change and security, emphasizing that his administration supports the Nigeria Police Green Initiative as a means to prioritize innovation and partnerships in transitioning to a green economy. He encouraged the Nigeria Police Force to transition their facilities to renewable energy sources, promote environmental awareness and education, and engage local and international investments in green infrastructure.

Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, described climate change as the most substantial threat to humanity, affecting everyday life and livelihoods. He reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to international climate agreements and outlined the key objectives of the Nigeria Police Green Initiative, including improving police infrastructure and operational efficiency, supporting economic reforms through green initiatives, and developing closer relationships with local communities through climate change engagement.

The Minister of Environment, represented by Balarabe Abbas Lawal, expressed full support for the Nigeria Police Green Initiative, emphasizing the link between environmental sustainability and national security. The Minister pledged to provide necessary resources and expertise to back the initiative and encouraged all members of the Nigeria Police Force to actively embrace green practices.

The Executive Vice Chairman of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Khalil Halilu, praised the initiative for its potential to contribute to Nigeria’s climate action commitments while enhancing the operational capacity of the police force. He announced plans by NASENI to mobilize financing and technical assistance to modernize police workshops nationwide.

The event was attended by various dignitaries, including senators, deputy governors, heads of government agencies, and representatives of state governors. The Nigeria Police Green Initiative was hailed as a moral imperative and strategic necessity, with the potential to promote clean energy adoption, energy efficiency, job creation, and reduce crime vulnerability.
