“R. Kelly Seeks Trump Clemency in Bid to Reduce 30 Year Federal Prison Sentence”
Disgraced American R&B singer Robert Sylvester Kelly, popularly known as R. Kelly, has formally petitioned U.S. President Donald Trump to commute his lengthy federal prison sentence, according to reports and records from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of the Pardon Attorney.
Kelly is seeking a sentence reduction rather than a full presidential pardon. His clemency request, which is listed as pending, comes as he continues to serve a combined federal sentence stemming from convictions for racketeering, sex trafficking and other sex related offences involving minors and women.
The singer was convicted in New York in 2021 for racketeering and sex trafficking and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. He was later convicted in Chicago in 2022 on child sexual abuse material and enticement-related charges. The sentences were structured largely to run concurrently, resulting in an overall prison term commonly reported as approximately 30 years, with a one year extension in certain calculations.
Kelly’s legal team has argued that the singer faces serious threats while incarcerated and has previously raised concerns about his safety and health. However, those claims have not resulted in his release, and his earlier request for emergency home detention was denied. Kelly continues to deny the criminal allegations against him and has pursued legal challenges to his convictions.
The clemency application now rests with the executive clemency process. A commutation would reduce or end the prison sentence without overturning the underlying convictions, unlike a pardon, which may provide broader legal relief. If no reduction is granted, Kelly is expected to remain incarcerated for decades, with his projected release date reported as being in the 2040s.
The development has renewed public attention on the former music star’s legal battles and the broader debate over presidential clemency for high profile federal inmates convicted of serious crimes.
