The Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), under the leadership of the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has provided critical financial support to no fewer than 9,500 veterans and vulnerable elderly citizens across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), reinforcing the Federal Government’s commitment to inclusive social protection.

The Edo State phase of the programme, held at the New Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City, benefitted 250 elderly citizens selected from the state’s three senatorial districts. Each beneficiary received a financial grant of ₦200,000 in recognition of their lifelong service, resilience, and contribution to national development.

The third edition of the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS), themed “Finding Joy in Old Age,” entails a total disbursement of ₦1.9 billion. Under the scheme, ₦50 million has been allocated to each state of the federation, the FCT, as well as the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA), extending support to veterans’ families nationwide.

The initiative underscores the Federal Government’s dedication to promoting the dignity, welfare, and well-being of senior citizens, particularly those aged 65 years and above, while also acknowledging the sacrifices of veterans through targeted assistance to their families.

Speaking at the event, Senator Oluremi Tinubu described the programme as a demonstration of a compassionate and people-centred administration that values the enduring contributions of Nigeria’s elderly population. She noted that since the inception of the administration in 2023, senior citizens have been honoured each December under the Renewed Hope Initiative as a gesture of national appreciation.

Represented by the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady in Edo State, Mrs Edesili Okpebholo Anani, the First Lady explained that the scheme is designed to support 9,500 vulnerable elderly citizens nationwide, each receiving ₦200,000 to help alleviate economic challenges and enhance their quality of life, particularly during the festive season.

“As we approach the festive period, it is imperative that we give priority attention to our elderly citizens. Their sacrifices laid the foundation for the progress enjoyed by younger generations, and it is both our responsibility and privilege to ensure that they live their later years in dignity, comfort, and good health,” she stated.

In a goodwill message, the Special Adviser on Health to the Edo State Government, Dr. Andrew Iyamu, highlighted the importance of comprehensive healthcare for senior citizens. He encouraged beneficiaries to adopt healthy lifestyles, engage in appropriate physical activity, and seek regular medical consultations while avoiding self-medication.

Beneficiaries of the programme, including Madam Agnes Akhamentalor, Mrs George Abhulimen, Mr Etiake Bernard, and Mrs Emorkidi Kate, expressed deep appreciation to the First Lady for the initiative, describing it as timely, compassionate, and impactful in enhancing their sense of wellbeing and social inclusion.
