Royal Force FC has emerged winner of the second edition of the MegaFest Tournament, tagged “Proudly 9ja,” held in celebration of Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary.
The tournament was sponsored by Hon. Ede Edebiri, candidate for Oredo East Constituency and co-sponsored by the Chairman of the Edo State Football Association, Comrade Fred Newton Erhunmwunse.
The competition, which kicked off with an opening ceremony led by Hon. Edebiri, featured six football clubs competing for the title at Benson Idahosa University, Ugbor Road, GRA, Benin City.
At the end of the tournament, Royal Force FC defeated Ogieva FC in a penalty shootout to emerge champions, while Ogieva FC finished as runners-up.
Other teams that participated in the tournament were MegaChamp FC, Iron Legend, Zion Power and Obans Dynasty FC.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Edebiri commended the organisers and participants for their efforts in promoting grassroots football. He said youth and women empowerment remained among his priority areas.
Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Chairman of Oredo Local Government Council on General Duties, Hon. Kingsley Uwagboe, congratulated the winners and participants.
Uwagboe said youth empowerment was a key priority of the administration of the Oredo Local Government Council Chairman, Hon. Engr. Gabriel Iduseri. He added that the chairman had remained an advocate for youth and women empowerment, as well as campaigns against drug abuse.
Responding to questions from journalists on behalf of MegaChamp Football Academy, Rev. Mrs. Quist-Igumah said the tournament was organised to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary and provide the six participating clubs with an opportunity to compete on an equal footing.
She further disclosed that MegaChamp Football Academy would organise its own league in Benin City in the coming months.
