“Senator Akobundu Launches Scholarship Scheme, Awards ₦200,000 to 114 Students to Combat School Dropouts in Abia Central”
Senator Austin Akobundu has reaffirmed his commitment to expanding access to education in Abia Central Senatorial District, declaring that no child in the constituency should be forced to abandon schooling because of financial hardship. The lawmaker made the pledge while unveiling a scholarship programme aimed at supporting indigent students across the district.
As part of the initiative, 114 students were awarded scholarships worth ₦200,000 each, providing financial assistance to help cover tuition, educational materials, and other academic expenses. The intervention is designed to ease the burden on families struggling with the rising cost of education while encouraging students to remain focused on their studies.
Speaking during the scholarship presentation, Senator Akobundu described education as one of the most effective tools for breaking the cycle of poverty and promoting sustainable development. He stressed that investing in young people is essential to building a stronger and more prosperous society, adding that the scholarship programme reflects his commitment to inclusive human capital development in Abia Central.
Education stakeholders and beneficiaries welcomed the initiative, noting that financial constraints remain one of the leading causes of school dropouts in many communities. They expressed optimism that the programme would not only keep more children in school but also inspire academic excellence and create opportunities for disadvantaged students to achieve their aspirations.
The scholarship scheme aligns with broader efforts by public officials, private organisations, and development partners to improve educational access across Nigeria. As economic pressures continue to affect many households, targeted interventions such as scholarships are increasingly viewed as critical measures for reducing inequality and ensuring that talented students are not denied quality education because of poverty.
