The investigation into the shooting of the Osun State Park Management System chairman, Mr. Iyanda Alowonle, has been transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for further inquiry. The incident, involving the Officer-in-Charge of the state’s Anti-Kidnapping Squad, has sparked protests across Osun State.
Transport workers suspended their services on Wednesday, leaving commuters stranded, as they protested the alleged shooting of Alowonle while in police custody. According to reports, the incident followed Alowonle’s arrest after complaints were filed against him. However, police sources claimed he was injured while attempting to flee and was allegedly found in possession of firearms.
Authorities confirmed that the officer involved in the shooting and the circumstances surrounding the event would be thoroughly investigated. Meanwhile, Alowonle is reportedly recovering in the hospital.
Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has appealed for calm, urging transport workers to refrain from taking the law into their hands. The governor assured the public that both state and federal authorities are committed to delivering justice in the matter.
Civil society organizations have also called for a detailed investigation into the activities of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, citing allegations of excessive force, extortion, and human rights abuses. Additionally, the National Union of Road Transport Workers urged the police to address unresolved cases of violence against its members.
The investigation is ongoing, with the police and government authorities emphasizing the need for peace and stability while ensuring accountability.
