The Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has made significant arrests in connection with bribery and illegal mining activities. Two suspects, Faleti Waheed and Noah Olalekan, were apprehended for allegedly offering a bribe of N1.2 million to EFCC officials in an attempt to compromise their operations. Additionally, seven individuals were taken into custody for engaging in illegal mining activities.

The EFCC’s operation, which took place in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, was based on credible intelligence and several days of surveillance. At the time of their arrest, five truckloads of assorted minerals, including lepidolite, lithium, and precious stones, were confiscated from the suspects. Investigations have revealed that the suspects were not licensed miners and did not have the necessary authorization to purchase or possess the minerals. They were also found to be evading payment of royalties to the federal and state governments, as required by law.

In a separate incident, the EFCC arrested Waheed and Olalekan after they attempted to bribe the operatives to secure the release of a seized truck. The duo approached the EFCC officials and negotiated to give them money in exchange for the truck’s release. However, the officers played along and arrested the suspects at the point of delivering the bribe. The sum of N995,500 was recovered from Waheed, who claimed to be a manager at a filling station in Ogbomoso, while N201,000 was found on Olalekan, who identified himself as a scavenger.

The EFCC has stated that the suspects will be arraigned in court once the ongoing investigations are concluded. These arrests highlight the agency’s commitment to combating corruption and illegal activities that undermine the country’s economic and social development.
