“Sokoto Approves N1.76bn for 1,000 Motorcycles to Strengthen Security Operations”
The Sokoto State Government has reportedly approved N1.76 billion for the procurement of 1,000 motorcycles as part of measures to strengthen security operations and improve mobility in communities affected by banditry.
The proposed procurement comes amid the state government’s broader efforts to equip security personnel and community based security structures with operational assets. Sokoto has faced persistent security challenges, particularly in several rural communities and local government areas vulnerable to bandit attacks.
However, available records indicate that the state has previously procured and distributed motorcycles for security purposes. In September 2024, the government handed over 710 motorcycles and 20 Hilux patrol vehicles to the Sokoto Community Guard Corps, with the equipment deployed to 13 local government areas identified as having significant security challenges.
The administration has continued to increase its investment in security logistics. In July 2026, the state government unveiled 62 operational vehicles, 320 motorcycles and other security equipment valued at N27.6 billion, including armoured vehicles, bullet resistant equipment, night vision devices and thermal imaging technology. The assets were commissioned by Defence Minister Christopher Musa.
Sokoto Governor Ahmed Aliyu has consistently maintained that strengthening the operational capacity of security agencies is central to his administration’s strategy against banditry and other violent crimes. The state government said its security interventions are intended to improve patrol coverage, intelligence gathering and the ability of security personnel to respond rapidly to threats, particularly in hard to reach rural communities.
