The Special Security Squad codenamed Operation Flush Out Kidnappers and Cultists has continued to sweep through criminal enclaves across Benin metropolis, arresting more suspects and dismantling hideouts in a renewed push to restore safety across Edo State.
The outfit, established by Governor Monday Okpebholo as part of his administration’s zero-tolerance approach to violent crime, carried out another round of coordinated raids on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, leading to the arrest of several suspected cultists and kidnappers.
Comprising a coalition of security forces including the military, police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), local hunters, vigilante groups, repentant cultists, and other key stakeholders the team mapped out hotspots in Benin City to target ongoing criminal activities.
The areas raided included Obe Community along Sapele Road, Iyowa Community, Evbonika, and Azuwa Village. These flashpoints, all within the Benin axis, had become notorious for harboring criminal elements threatening peace and investor confidence in the state.
At Azuwa Village in Ovia North East Local Government Area, officers stormed the area acting on intelligence reports, resulting in several arrests. In Evbonika, the team searched a suspected cult base and interrogated the property owner. Their presence, described by locals as decisive, has sent strong warning signals to cult gangs and criminal networks operating in the region.
Another significant operation was carried out at a hotel located along Power Line, off First Ugbor Road in the Government Reserved Area (GRA) of Benin. There, several suspects were arrested and incriminating materials recovered from the scene.
Governor Okpebholo, who had earlier approved the creation of the squad, reiterated his commitment to making Edo a crime-free state.
He emphasized that the operation is not mere rhetoric but a demonstration of his administration’s seriousness in delivering lasting peace and security.
