SSANU Women Push for Equal Opportunities, Greater Representation in Nigeria’s University Leadership.
The Women’s Wing of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has called for increased female representation in university leadership, decision making and national development, stressing the need to create equal opportunities for women across Nigeria’s higher education sector.
The call was made at the association’s 2026 National Women Conference held on Tuesday, October 27, at the Prof. Idris Abdulkadir Auditorium of the National Universities Commission (NUC) in Abuja.
Speaking at the conference, SSANU National Women Coordinator, Comrade Ijeoma Basil Kalu, urged female members to strengthen solidarity, embrace mentorship and pursue professional development as part of efforts to secure more influential positions within the association and the broader university system.
Kalu described the conference as more than an annual gathering, noting that it provided an important platform for women to exchange ideas, examine workplace challenges and develop practical strategies for improving their welfare and leadership participation.
She emphasized that women must be respected, empowered and given equal opportunities to contribute meaningfully to institutional growth and national development.
According to her, female university workers play significant roles in administration, institutional development and the effective management of higher education institutions, although their contributions are not always adequately recognized.
She maintained that women’s responsibilities extend beyond their individual professional duties, describing them as mentors, professionals, leaders and nation-builders whose experiences and contributions should be reflected in institutional decision making.
The coordinator also called for stronger professional networks and mentorship initiatives to support younger women, improve career advancement and prepare more female members for leadership responsibilities.
The conference was held under the theme, “Healthy Women, Strong Union: Positioning SSANU Women for Leadership and National Relevance.”
It brought together women coordinators, union executives, branch chairpersons, representatives of sister unions and other stakeholders to discuss women’s welfare, leadership development and their contributions to trade union activities.
SSANU’s National President, Comrade M. H. Ibrahim, also emphasized that women’s participation in leadership must go beyond occupying positions to having the confidence, competence and influence to shape policies and decisions affecting the union, universities and the country.
The renewed advocacy comes amid broader conversations about gender representation and inclusion in Nigeria’s higher education system, where women continue to contribute across administrative, professional and academic support structures.
Although participation in the workforce remains important, meaningful representation in strategic positions is equally essential to ensuring that women’s experiences and perspectives influence institutional policies, resource allocation and governance.
For Nigeria’s university system, expanding opportunities for qualified women in leadership could strengthen institutional accountability, improve workplace inclusion and broaden the range of perspectives informing decisions.
SSANU’s call therefore highlights the importance of combining individual professional development with institutional commitment to equal opportunities.
The conference also reinforces the need for sustained collaboration among university authorities, labour organisations and relevant stakeholders to ensure that women are not only recognized for their contributions but are adequately positioned to influence the future of higher education in Nigeria.
