Kwara State Government Takes Action Against Street Begging
The Kwara State Government has initiated a decisive move to tackle the issue of street begging in Ilorin, the state capital, by evacuating 46 beggars from key areas.
Commissioner for Social Development, Opeyemi Afolashade, emphasized that the evacuation is part of the government’s commitment to eliminating social problems associated with roadside begging in strategic parts of the city.
Expressing disappointment at the persistence of begging despite government interventions, Afolashade labeled it as a challenge to the state’s efforts in creating a conducive environment for its residents.
Furthermore, she highlighted the security risks posed by street begging, citing instances where beggars concealed weapons and charms, raising concerns about public safety.
The government’s stance underscores its dedication to supporting the vulnerable and economically disadvantaged segments of society. Afolashade assured that the administration, under Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, remains steadfast in its mission to uplift marginalized groups through various social initiatives.
Residents applauded the evacuation efforts, urging the government to sustain its actions in eradicating the menace entirely from the state.
The evacuation operation, which began in GRA and extended to several other locations, saw the relocation of beggars to the ministry’s facility for rehabilitation, while their children were taken to a reception center for immediate care and protection.
The team conducting the evacuation included the Director of Rehabilitation, Mr. Taiye Ikupolati, and other ministry staff members.
