The Oyo State Government has made a significant breakthrough in its efforts to curb illegal mining activities in the state. On Monday, it announced the arrest of 32 individuals, including two Chinese nationals, involved in illegal mining at Sooro market in Kishi, Irepo Local Government Area.
The arrest was made following a critical security stakeholders’ meeting held at the Deputy Governor’s Office in Ibadan, the state capital. The state Director-General of Operation Burst, Col James Oladipo Ajibola, disclosed the news, highlighting the collaborative efforts of traditional leaders and the joint security task force in restoring peace and order in the area.
During a clearance operation against the illegal miners at the market, the state Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal, ordered the closure of the market and the immediate evacuation of all illegal structures and shanties. This move was aimed at putting an end to the illegal mining activities that have been taking place in the area.
Col Ajibola further explained that the arrested individuals, including the two Chinese migrants, are currently undergoing investigation. The State Government had previously announced the closure of the market due to the activities of illegal miners.
The Executive Assistant to the State Governor on Security, retd CP Sunday Odukoya, addressed the media and warned that the government would not hesitate to take action against anyone involved in illegal mining activities in the state. He urged the indigenes to refrain from colluding with illegal miners and emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring peace and security in the region.
The government’s stance on the matter was made clear during the security meeting, with a strong message that everyone must take responsibility for maintaining peace in the area. The Kabiesi, Iba of Kishi, Oba Mashoud Lawal, also pledged to ensure the area is free of hoodlums and that all criminal activities within his jurisdiction will come to an end.
The closure of the market will remain in effect until further instructions are given by the State Governor, Seyi Makinde. The government’s determination to tackle illegal mining activities demonstrates its commitment to preserving the natural resources of the state and safeguarding the interests of its citizens.
